Christmas Lights Switch On Announcement

This year’s Weston-super-Mare Christmas Lights Switch On will take place on the Italian Gardens on Saturday 14th November. The switch on ceremony, organised by Weston BID, will commence at 5pm with the Town Mayor and special guests switching on the lights.

The Festive Lights are funded by Weston Town Council and stretch along the High Street, Grove Village, Waterloo Street, the Boulevard, St James Street, Meadow Street and Alexandra Parade giving the whole town centre a fantastic Christmas atmosphere.

The Mayor of Weston-super-Mare Town Council is thrilled to be part the official switch on this year. He said “We look forward to seeing lots of people for this spectacular ceremony!”

This year’s event follows Weston Carnival on Friday 13th November and Weston Business Improvement District (BID) hope the additional weekend events will keep the thousands of carnival visitors in the town for the whole weekend.

“It will be fantastic to invite the audience of Weston Carnival to join us for a day of festive fun on the Saturday as well.” said Steve Townsend, Weston BID manager.

“We hope to encourage visitors to stay in Weston-super-Mare for the weekend and enjoy the other brilliant attractions and events we have on offer, and enjoy some early Christmas shopping too.”

Saturday will start with a Christmas themed Local Producers Market from 9am until 2pm on the High Street followed by local musical acts on the Italian Gardens stage with the Switch On at 5pm. Shops will be opening extended hours until 7pm and the evening will finish with a spectacular firework display at 7.15pm. Parking will be available at the Sovereign Shopping Centre and this will stay open until after the fireworks have finished.

Titan the Robot will also be making an appearance with performances in the Sovereign Shopping Centre at 3pm and 6pm. The world famous 8ft robot gathers huge crowds wherever he goes and it is definitely a performance not to miss.

Following the Switch On event, Late Night Shopping will continue every Thursday until 17th December with Christmas events and entertainment in the town centre including costume characters, Christmas carols and a children’s elf trail.

Keep an eye out for more exciting Christmas news in the coming weeks!
