Weston-Super-Mare Town Council awarded £75,000 grant for Skate Park

Weston-super-Mare Town Council has received a grant from Sport England for £75,000 for a new Multi Wheel Facility at Hutton Moor Skate Park.

The Skate Park is among 148 local sports projects to secure a share of £9 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund. Since 2011, Inspired Facilities has been helping breathe new life into tired community sports facilities and converting existing buildings into venues suitable for grassroots sport.

The Town Council has recognised the need to improve the Skate Park due to the lack of wheeled sports facilities in the town and the popularity of the sport.  Developing the site into a Multi Wheel Facility will attract users of all ages and from a range of sports including skateboarding, BMX bike riding, roller blading, and scooter riding.

Developing the site will offer a fantastic opportunity to the community.  Consultation has already been carried out to determine what the public would like to see if the Skate Park was redeveloped and further consultation on the plans for the skate park will begin shortly. Not only will the public help create a Skate Park, but an environment that promotes activity and a healthy lifestyle which the whole family can be part of.

Town Clerk Malcolm Nicholson said ‘the Skate Park is a very well used facility popular with young people. Thanks to Sport England we will be able to  secure its future for at least the next 15 years’

Notes to editors:

  • Weston-super-Mare Town Council was established in 2000 and is the ‘parish’ council for the town. We are made up of 31 elected town councillors and are the only democratically elected body that exclusively represents the people of the town. We are the second largest civil parish council in England and Wales (by population).
  • The Skate Park at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre was installed by North Somerset Council before being taken over in 2004 by Weston-super-Mare Town Council.
  • Weston Skate Park Association are users of the skate park that have been involved in the consultation process and are helping to raise funds for the redevelopment.
