Weston General Hospital Accident and Emergency Department

Weston-super-Mare Town Council is concerned to hear of the temporary night closure of Weston General Hospital Accident and Emergency Department.

The Town Council is concerned that without an Accident and Emergency provision at night, extra pressure will be put on the ambulance service as they have further to transport patients and it will take longer for patients to receive the urgent care they need. There will also be additional pressure on the Accident and Emergency provision at Taunton and Bristol, as they treat patients from Weston and the surrounding area.

Weston is a growing town with a population of over 80,000 and higher proportion of elderly patients than the national average. Whilst we appreciate that there are issues with recruiting specialist staff for Weston General Hospital, we urge Weston Area Health NHS Trust to ensure that Weston General Hospital is able to provide the level of service that a town of this size and demographic demands.
