SUMMARY:Anti-Racism working group
DESCRIPTION:Our pledge to be an anti-racist council\nWe hold community meetings if you would like to attend these meetings\, please email development@wsm-tc.gov.uk  \nAt the end of November 2020\, the Town Council passed an anti-racist resolution as follows: \nThe Black Lives Matter Movement was set up in 2013 after the death of Trayvon Martin and subsequent acquittal of his killer. Global protests increased following the killing of George Floyd in June 2020\, for which Minneapolis police officers were charged with second-degree murder (and aiding and abetting second-degree murder). \nPeaceful protests in support of Black Lives Matter have been held in Weston super Mare and throughout the UK. Black\, Asian and Minority Ethnic people are 54% more likely than white people to be fined under the new coronavirus lockdown laws in the UK. Around two-thirds of healthcare staff who have died as a result of COVID-19 are people of colour whereas they make up 20% of the overall workforce. \nRacism in all forms\, both structural and in individuals\, continues to be a serious and often unseen problem in the UK. Although progress has been made in combating racism\, work to eradicate it entirely is far from complete. This Council\, representing people in Weston super Mare has a duty as a public leader to actively lead that work. Thus: \nThat the Council resolves as follows: \n\nTo stand together unreservedly with black people in Weston-super-Mare\nTo work to eradicate racism\, xenophobia\, Islamophobia\, Antisemitism and discrimination which impact the entire community and blight our society.\nTo establish further initiatives to ensure Weston-super-Mare is actively inclusive and anti-racist.\nTo initiate a review involving Black\, Asian and Minority Ethnic members of our community of our processes\, policies and organisational attitudes\, hold listening and engagement events seeking the views of people of colour on the issues rising from recent protests\, and work with and support Community groups\, youth groups\, and places of worship in engaging with these issues.\nTo update our Equalities Policy and produce a plan addressing matters identified by these reviews and consultations.\nTo invite appropriate speakers on these issues to deliver training which will be mandatory for staff and expected for all councillors.\n\nThe council is committed to implementing this\, and working with black and ethnic minority members of our communities will begin to develop an action plan. \n

SUMMARY:Anti-racism share and tell evening
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend an evening of sharing and learning with Weston’s anti-racism working group. \n25th April at 6.15pm\nWeston Museum\, Burlington Street\, BS23 1PR \nRSVP to development@wsm-tc.gov.uk \nIn 2020\, Weston-super-Mare Town Council passed an anti-racist resolution and committed to challenging racism internally and in the wider community. This resulted in the formation of the anti-racism working group: a cross-organisational forum\, open to the public\, where attendees could share updates\, ask questions and collaborate on anti-racist initiatives. \nTwo-and-a-half years on\, it is time to look at what has worked well\, what could work better\, and ultimately decide the direction the working group should take moving forwards. Though Weston-super-Mare Town Council are facilitating the group\, it relies on community input – we need your ideas to make things happen! \nWe would be extremely grateful if you could attend our ‘share and tell’ evening at Weston Museum\, starting at 6.15pm on the 25th April. We’d love to hear what everyone has been up to\, and hear your ideas about what the community needs. \nWhilst not essential\, if you would like to bring a plate of food or something to share with the group we would be happy to receive it. Tea and coffee refreshments will be provided. \nPlease get in touch with development@wsm-tc.gov.uk to RSVP or ask any questions.

SUMMARY:Racism and its Impact on Mental Health – WTC Talks
DESCRIPTION:At the end of November 2020\, Weston Town Council passed an anti-racism motion that will help to ensure Weston-super-Mare is actively inclusive and anti-racist. \nAs part of this resolution\, the council has been holding meetings with many of the towns representative and community groups -such as the local Polish Association\, the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) network\, the Bangladeshi community\, Black Lives Matters (BLM) and the Multicultural Friendship Association (MFA) to name a few. \n  \nWe now would like to encourage wider engagement and participation by opening these meetings to impactful organisations via Zoom and will broadcast the meetings live to the larger community in Weston via the Town Council Facebook page.  \nOur intention is to hold some meetings as themed\, to include a speaker on our chosen topics.
