SUMMARY:Weston Tree and Plant Group
DESCRIPTION:Weston tree and plant group’s aim is to bring together as many people\, groups\, organisations and businesses involved and interested in planting trees and other plants to increase tree canopy levels and biodiversity across the town. \nThe Office for National Statistics had conducted a study which showed that “the removal of pollution by trees\, plants and grass saved 27\,000 life years and the NHS around £1billion in medical costs” in 2020 alone. \nIn addition\, a new tree nursery is being developed at a site in the Maltlands area of the Winterstoke ward. ] \nThe new tree nursey is called ‘WeSee Trees’ which gives a nod to SEE MONSTER Think Tanks where the original tree and plant group community was formed. It is anticipated that this will become a thriving community-led space to grow and nurture trees for planting in the future\, as tree nursery has the potential to become invaluable to the town’s planting commitments and enable rare native species to be grown locally. The trees grown could be used to create woodlands\, hedgerows and orchards or they can be planted in dedicated green space such as local parks\, school grounds\, private farmland\, community gardens and private household gardens. \nPartnerships have already been made with groups such as Friends of Grove Park\, Keepers Gate Forest School and Osprey Outdoors to help establish the site\, gain volunteers\, share skills and collaborate with wider community initiatives. \nIf you would like to get involved with Weston tree and plant group\, the tree planting sub-committee or WeSee Trees nursery please head to www.wsmtrees.co.uk.

SUMMARY:Weston Tree and Plant Group
DESCRIPTION:Weston tree and plant group’s aim is to bring together as many people\, groups\, organisations and businesses involved and interested in planting trees and other plants to increase tree canopy levels and biodiversity across the town. \nWorking alongside North Somerset Council and Weston Town Council the group has gained momentum rapidly and is now creating a sub-committee to work directly with North Somerset Council’s tree officer to have a say and support the creation tree-lined streets and urban areas. Assisted by Weston Town Council\, community members are currently working with North Somerset Council to transform the disused space next to Maltlands Play Area into a community tree nursery for Weston-super-Mare.  \nThe new tree nursey is called ‘WeSee Trees’ which gives a nod to SEE MONSTER Think Tanks where the original tree and plant group community was formed. It is anticipated that this will become a thriving community-led space to grow and nurture trees for planting in the future\, as tree nursery has the potential to become invaluable to the town’s planting commitments and enable rare native species to be grown locally. The Maple trees are now planted in Clarence park and the development of a garden is taking place at the end of the beach lawns.

\nAll of this comes at the same time the SEE MONSTER trees and plants have found a new home. The Maple trees are now planted in Clarence park and the development of a garden is taking place at the end of the beach lawns.  \nIf you would like to get involved with Weston tree and plant group\, the tree planting sub-committee or WeSee Trees nursery please head to www.wsmtrees.co.uk.

DESCRIPTION:Some people have a morning routine\, a first coffee\, a walk with the dog or even yoga. Rituals and habits come in all forms\, and for Mayor Sonia Russè … she litter picks!  \nThe Mayor says ‘I realise litter picking is not exciting but sadly despite the best efforts of many\, Weston as with other towns in England continues to suffer compared with those Scotland and Ireland’. \nHer efforts strongly echo those of the Town Council\, with one of the pillars in their strategy being: \nCleaner and Greener – to work with our communities and partners towards protecting and enhancing the environment in which we all live. Setting an example for promoting and helping to publicise not just the current beach clean initiatives but also those who have adopted streets\, clearing litter\, gutters and open spaces and making safe the environments used by our communities.   \n The essential need to highlight biodiversity\, rewilding and the reduction of waste generation by setting a positive example to our young people who are and will be the future custodians of our town and open spaces.   \nThe Mayor is hoping people will join her on a litter pick during the Great Big Green week on Saturday 24th September & 1st October 11am – 12noon at Big Worle 11 Feniton\, Clovelly Rd\, Worle\, BS22 6LN. This is an informal event\, please bring your own bags and litter pickers and gloves. SUMMARY:Street Tree Planting Community Planning
DESCRIPTION:Following ongoing discussions and collaborative working with both Weston Town Council and the recently formed Weston and Planting Tree Group\, North Somerset Council’s Tree Officer would like to meet in Weston-super-Mare on the morning of Friday 8th July at 9:30am with everyone interested in the planting and positioning of trees. The plan to walk areas of Weston and record locations where there is the potential for planting new street trees sharing our combined local knowledge. North Somerset Council Tree Officers will be available to look at the suitability of locations and begin to address the complexities and challenges with highway planting. \n Over the last 12 years North Somerset Council have found it difficult to plant replacement trees in hard surfaces of the highway when we have had cause to remove trees\, due to a lack of resources. However\, working with Weston Town Council\, money has been made available to enable new planting of highway trees. This is great news as we can begin to progress our plans for the regreening of Weston’s highway network and increase the overall canopy cover which will also begin to fulfil the objectives in North Somersets Green Infrastructure Strategy. \nIf you would like to come along to help plot locations for potential new trees\, please meet us at 9:30am by the BT building at the eastern end of the Boulevard; from here\, we will split into groups and start walking the streets. Maps shall be provided but if you have a clipboard\, please do bring it along. \nWe look forward to seeing you on the 8th July; if you have any questions or can make the meeting\, please contact us at Rewilding.Volunteering@n-somerset.gov.uk

SUMMARY:Facebook live Laura Jones - Talking Scrap - Community Scrapstore
DESCRIPTION:The Community Scrapstore is an Aladdin’s cave full of marvellous and sometimes quirky resources that will fire the imagination and spark creativity and play. They divert tonnes of materials from landfill each year by collecting clean\, safe waste products from local businesses and industry to enable it to be made available for reuse through their store.\n\n\nFrom the scrapstore – We believe that reducing the amount of new resources that are consumed has a positive effect on the environment.  By diverting clean and safe business waste from landfill\, we are able to offer those materials at low cost to be reused for creative purposes and play.  We also believe that creativity and play help to support good mental health and wellbeing\, and stimulate imagination.  There is no ‘right’ way to use the resources; what can be made from them is limitless. \n\nLaura Jones will be answering your questions on a Facebook live event hosted by Weston-super-Mare Town Council’s Facebook page. SUMMARY:Facebook Live panel Q&A - Talking wild life
DESCRIPTION:A panel of local wildlife experts coming together to answer your questions and share news on our local area.\n\nDennis Darling has been interested in insects for as long as he can remember. This led\, inevitably\, to an interested in plants and insects’ broader relationship to natural history and the environment. What is now called ecology.\nBefore moving to Weston in 2002 he was conservation officer for North Kent Wildlife Preservation Society. He has been familiar with Weston since his brother came to live here in 1964. He now lives in a bungalow backing on to Weston Woods where the Wood Lane bridleway runs up into the woods.\nFor eleven years he was leader of the local U3A natural history group.\nHe has visited the Worlebury hill fort often and on occasion has assisted the group in clearing the area to the west of the fort.\n\n\nDavid Agassiz has a lifelong interest in Natural History\, especially moths and butterflies – specialising in the smaller ones. After working as a vicar for 25 years he embarked on research at Imperial College and then worked in the International Institute for Entomology. He has been a Scientific Associate at the Natural History Museum since 1997. A couple of years living and working in Africa gave him an interest in their fauna where he has described many species new to science.\nBefore moving to Weston he often stayed adjacent to Dolebury so got to know the Mendips and other local habitats. Weston Woods are so near they have become an interest.\nHe is concerned about climate change and the loss of biodiversity and belongs to Extinction Rebellion.\n\n\nJanine Connor has worked as a countryside ranger in the UK for over 10 years and for the past 7 years has been based in North Somerset and the Bristol area where she looks after protected land and countryside for wildlife and people. Her work involves practical conservation work\, habitat creation\, species and habitat monitoring and visitor engagement. She is passionate about protecting wildlife and enhancing our environment. She has a keen interest in traditional orchards\, veteren trees\, dormice and wildflowers. Janine says – ‘Although I am not an expert on climate change\, I do have deal with the impact of extreme weather and season change on our local environment and wildlife. For me\, it’s about making our environment and wildlife as resilient as possible in the face of a changing climate. I’d love to see more green areas that are set aside for wildlife and corridors that connect them together.\n\nDavid Gibbs has a wide interest in all aspects of the natural world. He knows his birds and plants pretty well\, but as he works as a consultant ecologist specialising in invertebrates\, it is in insects that his interest peaks.\nHe has an interest in the management of Weston Woods\, particularly with regard to the deadwood fauna and fungi and the grassland restoration project. David once did a survey at the old tip at Hutton Moor and found it to have potential and he thinks this could be an important wildlife resource in the town. These subjects will all be open to questions and thought in our conversation.\n\nThe panel will be answering your questions on a Facebook live event hosted by Weston-super-Mare Town Council’s Facebook page. Please send your questions in advance to the discussion for this event. https://www.facebook.com/WsMTC

SUMMARY:Facebook Live Q&A with Steve Clark - Talking Trees
DESCRIPTION:Steve Clark is a Chartered Forester and arboricultural consultant who manages trees and open spaces in urban and rural settings. He provides advice on all aspects of tree care and management for private landowners and local authorities including the protection of trees\, trees in relation to development and the creation and planting of tree collections. There is an increasing focus on maintaining a safe relationship between the trees\, their immediate environment and the general public.\nWeston Town Council Climate Change Working Group has the target of taking WSMTC to Carbon Neutrality by 2030. Part of their approach to the climate crisis is to value the trees that they manage and to plant a further 10\,000 trees to increase carbon sequestration and biodiversity in Weston-super-Mare. Within the Grounds Department\, we started by talking about increasing the tree stock\, but very quickly we broadened our approach to improving the levels of biodiversity on our sites. The first step in this was to reduce the grass cutting in Milton Road Cemetery\, which had spectacular and unexpected results.\nSteve Clark will talk to us about some of the results found at Milton Road Cemetery\, will take your questions on trees and welcomes your thoughts on some of the potential plans on what’s next. This is an interactive talk and the comments will help shape what’s to come.\nSteve will be answering your questions on a Facebook live event hosted by Weston-super-Mare Town Council’s Facebook page. Please send your questions in advance to the discussion for this event. https://www.facebook.com/WsMTC

SUMMARY:Phase two in Cleaner Coastlines fight against plastic pollution
DESCRIPTION:Back in October 2017\, Weston-super-Mare’s Chamber of Commerce\, together with the Weston Mercury\, launched a Surfers Against Sewage campaign for Weston to become an approved Plastic-free community.\nThe Cleaner Coastlines campaign meant working with local government\, businesses\, schools\, colleges and youth\, church and community groups to help reduce the amount of single-use plastic in our town.\nCleaner Coastlines were absolutely delighted to receive the accreditation from Surfers Against Sewage in August 2018\, with over 50+ amazing local business heroes signing up. Being a Plastic-free community doesn’t mean that you won’t see any plastic in Weston-super-Mare\, but it demonstrates our commitment and dedication to our community\, environment and reducing the amount of plastic pollution.\n\nCleaner Coastlines are now launching phase two\, and Debbie Apted will be joining Becky Walsh to talk about what that means for the town and how you can get involved.\nDebbie will be answering your questions on a Facebook live event hosted by Weston-super-Mare Town Council’s Facebook page.
