SUMMARY:(Cancelled)Town Council
DESCRIPTION:Members of the public are welcome to attend full Town Council meetings. \nA Town Council meeting\, may not sound like the most interesting way to spend your evening. However\, listening to the councillors from different political parties you are likely to learn more about them than from a flyer that comes through the door at election time. More importantly\, you can request to speak at the meeting by contacting admin@wsm-tc.gov.uk and they can learn about the issues that matter to you.

Among the highlights is the revamp of the café building\, which is hoped to reopen in early summer 2025.\n\nWe are committed to transforming the Old Town Quarry into a safe\, accessible\, and vibrant space that honours its rich natural and cultural heritage and we want the voice of the people of Weston-super-Mare to guide us. ‘Your Quarry\, Your voice’.\n\nWe encourage everyone to join our mailing list for updates. SUMMARY:Anti-Racism working group
DESCRIPTION:Our pledge to be an anti-racist council\nWe hold community meetings if you would like to attend these meetings\, please email development@wsm-tc.gov.uk  \nAt the end of November 2020\, the Town Council passed an anti-racist resolution as follows: \nThe Black Lives Matter Movement was set up in 2013 after the death of Trayvon Martin and subsequent acquittal of his killer. Global protests increased following the killing of George Floyd in June 2020\, for which Minneapolis police officers were charged with second-degree murder (and aiding and abetting second-degree murder). \nPeaceful protests in support of Black Lives Matter have been held in Weston super Mare and throughout the UK. Black\, Asian and Minority Ethnic people are 54% more likely than white people to be fined under the new coronavirus lockdown laws in the UK. Around two-thirds of healthcare staff who have died as a result of COVID-19 are people of colour whereas they make up 20% of the overall workforce. \nRacism in all forms\, both structural and in individuals\, continues to be a serious and often unseen problem in the UK. Although progress has been made in combating racism\, work to eradicate it entirely is far from complete. This Council\, representing people in Weston super Mare has a duty as a public leader to actively lead that work. Thus: \nThat the Council resolves as follows: \n\nTo stand together unreservedly with black people in Weston-super-Mare\nTo work to eradicate racism\, xenophobia\, Islamophobia\, Antisemitism and discrimination which impact the entire community and blight our society.\nTo establish further initiatives to ensure Weston-super-Mare is actively inclusive and anti-racist.\nTo initiate a review involving Black\, Asian and Minority Ethnic members of our community of our processes\, policies and organisational attitudes\, hold listening and engagement events seeking the views of people of colour on the issues rising from recent protests\, and work with and support Community groups\, youth groups\, and places of worship in engaging with these issues.\nTo update our Equalities Policy and produce a plan addressing matters identified by these reviews and consultations.\nTo invite appropriate speakers on these issues to deliver training which will be mandatory for staff and expected for all councillors.\n\nThe council is committed to implementing this\, and working with black and ethnic minority members of our communities will begin to develop an action plan. \n

SUMMARY:RNLI Weston-super-Mare to Parade Through Town Celebrating Honorary Freedom Grant
DESCRIPTION:RNLI Weston-super-Mare to Parade Through Town Celebrating Honorary Freedom Grant\nThe Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Weston-super-Mare will parade along Weston Sea Front on Sunday 10th of March 2024 at 4:30 PM. This grand event is a celebration of the Honorary Freedom of the Town recently granted to the RNLI Weston-super-Mare\, coinciding with the RNLI’s 200th-anniversary celebrations.\nThe motion to grant Honorary Freedom of the Town was passed at the Full Town Council Meeting on November 20th\, 2023\, acknowledging the exceptional contribution made by generations of local crews to saving life in the Bristol Channel.\nLed by the Sea Cadet Band\, the parade will depart from the lifeboat station on Knightstone Plaza and proceed along the seafront to the Grand Pier where Rear Admiral Ian Moncrieff\, Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset\, Robert Drewett\, High Sheriff of Somerset\, Councillor Ciaran Cronnelly\, Mayor and Councillor John Crockford-Hawley\, Deputy Mayor will take the salute by the pier entrance.\nCllr Ciaran Cronnelly\, expressed his enthusiasm for this event\, stating\, “RNLI Weston-super-Mare is an incredible organisation that has saved countless lives for well over 140 years\, and as a town\, we owe them a massive debt of gratitude. Granting the RNLI Freedom is the greatest honour a town can bestow.”\nThe Mayor continued\, “I’d encourage all members of the public to come and watch and to show their appreciation for the RNLI’s life-saving work. Later that day\, I’ll officially sign the scrolls\, in the crew’s presence\, confirming the grant of freedom.”\nChris Ware\, the Operations Manager at Weston RNLI said\, “The whole Weston-super-Mare RNLI family are really looking forward to formally receiving the immense honour of the Freedom of our hometown\, which supports us so well in everything we do.”\nHe continued\, “At the event\, we will have members of our current crew\, fundraisers\, and retired crew\, supported as always by our family and friends. Also taking part will be lifeboat colleagues from our central support team and flank stations such as Barry Dock and Burnham-on-Sea. In the spirit of the RNLI 200 celebrations\, we will commemorate our past\, celebrate what we do today\, and hopefully inspire the next generation of volunteers in Weston.”\nDeputy Mayor John Crockford-Hawley\, who wrote the official history of Weston Lifeboat added “We all look forward to the day when our lifeboat crew returns to their historic home on Birnbeck Pier”\nThis memorable celebration will include a sail- past from local lifeboats and promises to be a heart-warming and inspiring occasion for the entire community. \n
