SUMMARY:Anti-Racism working group
DESCRIPTION:Our pledge to be an anti-racist council\nWe hold community meetings if you would like to attend these meetings\, please email development@wsm-tc.gov.uk  \nAt the end of November 2020\, the Town Council passed an anti-racist resolution as follows: \nThe Black Lives Matter Movement was set up in 2013 after the death of Trayvon Martin and subsequent acquittal of his killer. Global protests increased following the killing of George Floyd in June 2020\, for which Minneapolis police officers were charged with second-degree murder (and aiding and abetting second-degree murder). \nPeaceful protests in support of Black Lives Matter have been held in Weston super Mare and throughout the UK. Black\, Asian and Minority Ethnic people are 54% more likely than white people to be fined under the new coronavirus lockdown laws in the UK. Around two-thirds of healthcare staff who have died as a result of COVID-19 are people of colour whereas they make up 20% of the overall workforce. \nRacism in all forms\, both structural and in individuals\, continues to be a serious and often unseen problem in the UK. Although progress has been made in combating racism\, work to eradicate it entirely is far from complete. This Council\, representing people in Weston super Mare has a duty as a public leader to actively lead that work. Thus: \nThat the Council resolves as follows: \n\nTo stand together unreservedly with black people in Weston-super-Mare\nTo work to eradicate racism\, xenophobia\, Islamophobia\, Antisemitism and discrimination which impact the entire community and blight our society.\nTo establish further initiatives to ensure Weston-super-Mare is actively inclusive and anti-racist.\nTo initiate a review involving Black\, Asian and Minority Ethnic members of our community of our processes\, policies and organisational attitudes\, hold listening and engagement events seeking the views of people of colour on the issues rising from recent protests\, and work with and support Community groups\, youth groups\, and places of worship in engaging with these issues.\nTo update our Equalities Policy and produce a plan addressing matters identified by these reviews and consultations.\nTo invite appropriate speakers on these issues to deliver training which will be mandatory for staff and expected for all councillors.\n\nThe council is committed to implementing this\, and working with black and ethnic minority members of our communities will begin to develop an action plan. \n

SUMMARY:RNLI Weston-super-Mare to Parade Through Town Celebrating Honorary Freedom Grant
DESCRIPTION:RNLI Weston-super-Mare to Parade Through Town Celebrating Honorary Freedom Grant\nThe Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Weston-super-Mare will parade along Weston Sea Front on Sunday 10th of March 2024 at 4:30 PM. This grand event is a celebration of the Honorary Freedom of the Town recently granted to the RNLI Weston-super-Mare\, coinciding with the RNLI’s 200th-anniversary celebrations.\nThe motion to grant Honorary Freedom of the Town was passed at the Full Town Council Meeting on November 20th\, 2023\, acknowledging the exceptional contribution made by generations of local crews to saving life in the Bristol Channel.\nLed by the Sea Cadet Band\, the parade will depart from the lifeboat station on Knightstone Plaza and proceed along the seafront to the Grand Pier where Rear Admiral Ian Moncrieff\, Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset\, Robert Drewett\, High Sheriff of Somerset\, Councillor Ciaran Cronnelly\, Mayor and Councillor John Crockford-Hawley\, Deputy Mayor will take the salute by the pier entrance.\nCllr Ciaran Cronnelly\, expressed his enthusiasm for this event\, stating\, “RNLI Weston-super-Mare is an incredible organisation that has saved countless lives for well over 140 years\, and as a town\, we owe them a massive debt of gratitude. Granting the RNLI Freedom is the greatest honour a town can bestow.”\nThe Mayor continued\, “I’d encourage all members of the public to come and watch and to show their appreciation for the RNLI’s life-saving work. Later that day\, I’ll officially sign the scrolls\, in the crew’s presence\, confirming the grant of freedom.”\nChris Ware\, the Operations Manager at Weston RNLI said\, “The whole Weston-super-Mare RNLI family are really looking forward to formally receiving the immense honour of the Freedom of our hometown\, which supports us so well in everything we do.”\nHe continued\, “At the event\, we will have members of our current crew\, fundraisers\, and retired crew\, supported as always by our family and friends. Also taking part will be lifeboat colleagues from our central support team and flank stations such as Barry Dock and Burnham-on-Sea. In the spirit of the RNLI 200 celebrations\, we will commemorate our past\, celebrate what we do today\, and hopefully inspire the next generation of volunteers in Weston.”\nDeputy Mayor John Crockford-Hawley\, who wrote the official history of Weston Lifeboat added “We all look forward to the day when our lifeboat crew returns to their historic home on Birnbeck Pier”\nThis memorable celebration will include a sail- past from local lifeboats and promises to be a heart-warming and inspiring occasion for the entire community. \n

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:The Mayor Gets Ready to Lace Up: The Mayors training launch for ‘Run across Weston – The Mayor’s Super Marathon’ on 2nd March 2024 \nThe countdown to an exhilarating challenge begins as the Mayor of Weston-super-Mare announces the official launch of his training for event\, ‘Run across Weston – The Mayor’s Super Marathon.’ The event aims to raise crucial funds for Weston’s Food Bank\, supporting those in need within the community.\nHis training process is set to kick off with a bang on Saturday\, 30th September 2023\, at the Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare. This event promises to be more than just a physical preparation – it’s a collective call to action\, an opportunity to foster community spirit\, and a chance to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those facing food insecurity.\nThe Mayor’s Super Marathon is a testament to unity and compassion. It’s not just a run that he’ll be doing across Weston; it’s a statement of solidarity \nHow to Get Involved: \nShow your support at his Training Kickoff: Be a part of the excitement as the Mayor commences his training journey on the 30th of September 9.45am at the Grand Pier. With support from Anytime Fitness and the Grand Pier the Mayor will launch his training by running on a treadmill near the seafront. Pop along and show your support – and donate to the foodbank if you can. The Mayor will then head off to celebrate Pride. \nDonate to Weston’s Food Bank: While he gears up for the marathon\, let’s remember the reason behind this event: supporting Weston’s Food Bank. The Mayor has launched a Just Giving page (details here: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/MayorWsM?utm_term=adNraxM79) where you can contribute directly to this vital cause with all proceeds going to Weston Foodbank. Your donations will make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and families facing food insecurity. \nHelp train the Mayor: The Mayor is going to need all the help he can get to prepare and is calling on the community to help him. If you’re a sports club\, gym\, fitness organisation or have a sporty event coming up then invite the Mayor and take him through his paces! You can get in touch with Rebecca.saunders@wsm-tc.gov.uk. \nSpread the Word: Even though you can’t participate in the marathon\, you can still play a vital role. Share the news about the event and training kickoff across your social media platforms. Encourage friends\, family\, and colleagues to donate or sponsor. \nThe Mayor expressed his enthusiasm\, stating\, “I’m thrilled to embark on this journey towards supporting our community’s food bank. The training kickoff will set the tone for an inspiring and impactful marathon. Let’s join forces\, promote fitness\, and make a real difference in the lives of our local community.”\nKeep an eye for updates on the donation page\, training schedule\, and other event details by visiting the Mayors Facebook page www.facebook.com/mayorofwestonsupermare. Together\, we can turn every step of this marathon into a stride towards a stronger\, more resilient community. \nAbout Weston’s Food Bank:\nWeston’s Food Bank is a local non-profit organisation dedicated to alleviating hunger in our community. Your support for ‘Run across Weston – The Mayor’s Super Marathon’ will help make a positive impact on the lives of those in need.

SUMMARY:FREE mindfulness and nature connection at Ellenborough Park West
DESCRIPTION:Come along to Ellenborough Park West for a FREE mindfulness session led by Steve. Accessible for beginners and experienced participants alike\, the sessions can be experienced as one-offs or a progression over the summer. \nWe will begin with a short mindfulness/meditation practice to bring ourselves into the moment with a deeper awareness of ourselves. We will then take that awareness and presence out into the park to connect with and experience nature more deeply from a grounded and centered place. \nSteve has worked with trees and nature for over 30 years and has practiced various spiritual disciplines for longer. His work is based on 20 years of teaching the meditations and energy work of Michael Barnett\, as well as practicing healing arts and body work. He is excited to bring the two worlds together and provide a space for people to experience themselves and nature in a conscious and deeper way that will open them to the healing possibilities that being in nature can bring. \nNo booking required – please arrive ready for a prompt 10:00am start. We recommend bringing a towel or blanket to sit on during the mediation. \nPlease see the Town Council Diary for the full programme of events.
