SUMMARY:Facebook live Q&A with family environmental campaigner Jen Gale
DESCRIPTION:Jen Gale and is a passionate believer in the power that we all have\, to change the world. \nShe says – ‘I don’t know about you\, but for me\, sometimes the world right now can feel like a pretty scary place. Climate change is well and truly here and the effects are being felt all around the globe. As one person\, one family\, it can feel like we are powerless to change it. But we can’. \nJen is an ordinary\, exhausted mum of two whose life changed when she dragged and cajoled the family into a year buying nothing new. That year changed not only what she buys\, but also how she sees her place in the world. Jen recognised the power that we all have as individuals to make a difference to the things we care about\, simply through getting informed about the impact of our daily choices and figuring out easy swaps and changes. The family are still (just about) talking to her. Jen writes and podcasts about all things Sustainable(ish). SUMMARY:Unveiling of a Blue Plaque for Dwight D. Eisenhower – Water Tower Weston woods
DESCRIPTION:Weston Town Council & Weston Civic Society are delighted to announce the unveiling of a Blue Plaque for Dwight D. Eisenhower – Water Tower Weston woods – 20th Aug at 2.00pm \nDwight D Eisenhower \nWhere? Weston Woods water tower \nDwight D Eisenhower is the only American President to have set foot in Weston-super-Mare. \nAs Supreme Allied Commander Europe he arrived in Weston towards the close of World War Two and stayed one night in 1944\, en-route to the D-Day landings. \nThe town was filled with American servicemen. Officers were billeted in hotels whilst other ranks slept under canvass in Ellenborough Park \nFar from throwing around his status ‘Ike’ opted to sleep in a caravan parked near the water tower in Weston Woods\, in the midst of military vehicles huddled under tree cover and along the Toll Road \nFollowing the war\, Eisenhower became NATO’s first Supreme Commander and then President of the United States from 1953 until 1961. \nA gentle stroll through Weston Woods to where an American president once slept under the stars will enable us all to share this fleeting moment of world history. \nWe welcome a socially distanced audience at the unveiling of this Blue Plaque.

SUMMARY:Unveiling of a Blue Plaque for John Hugh Smyth-Pigott – Grove House
DESCRIPTION:Weston Town Council & Weston Civic Society are delighted to announce the unveiling of a Blue Plaques for John Hugh Smyth-Pigott – Grove House – 31st July at 10.00am \nJohn Hugh Smyth-Pigott \nWhere? Grove House Grove Park \nThough many in the family were quite bonkers\, John had vision. He inherited the manorial lordship of Weston-super-Mare on Christmas Day 1823\, following the death of the Rev. Wadham Pigott. \nThe energetic young squire encouraged village children to plant trees on the hillside\, initially to create a private game reserve but\, once trees began to mature\, he threw this woodland open to public wandering. \nTwo of his original gate lodges are still with us\, one in private occupation in Worlebury Hill Road and the other serving food in castellated splendour at the Kewstoke end of the Toll Road \nHe replaced the crumbling Medieval St John’s with a new parish church and greatly enlarged his manorial residence at Grove House most of which was subsequently destroyed during the Second World War. \nWith assistance from far-sighted agents he\, along with a new breed of local entrepreneurs\, began to change Weston from a sleepy village of little consequence into a town of rising middle-class pretention and expectation. It was the dawning of tourism. \nWe welcome a socially distanced audience at the unveiling of this Blue Plaque.
