DESCRIPTION:Heritage Open Days Festival 2023\nDiscover Weston-super-Mare’s heritage for free as sites across the town get ready to welcome visitors between Friday 8 and Sunday 17 September.\nThis is part of England’s largest heritage festival.\nA programme of events can be viewed or downloaded on our website  www.n-somerset.gov.uk/heritageopendays23 \nYou are invited to attend Heritage Open Days; Blakehay Theatre on Saturday 9th September 2023 from 10am – 4pm. \nUnder the theme Creativity Unwrapped\, the Blakehay Theatre will be opening its doors for a day of access all areas this September for Heritage Open Days; with a rare chance to see what happens behind the scenes… \nThe Blakehay Theatre is #MoreThanATheatre and has three varied and versatile spaces – Main House\, Studio Theatre and the Theatre Bar. Explore all of them with a guided backstage tour. \nThe building is unique having been converted into a theatre from an old Baptist church in 1986. Local historian John Crockford-Hawley will be delivering talks on the history of the building in the Theatre Bar. \nAlongside an array of shows and events\, the Blakehay Theatre is home to a collection of weekly studio classes ranging from dance to youth theatre. Heritage Open Days sees the teachers putting on special classes/workshops that you can observe/taster for free. SUMMARY:FREE mindfulness and nature connection at Ellenborough Park West
DESCRIPTION:Come along to Ellenborough Park West for a FREE mindfulness session led by Steve. The sessions will be accessible for beginners and experienced participants alike and can be experienced as a one-off session or a progression over the summer. \nWe will begin with a short mindfulness/meditation practice to bring ourselves into the moment with a deeper awareness of ourselves. We will then take that awareness and presence out into the park to connect with and experience nature more deeply from a grounded and centered place. \nSteve has worked with trees and nature for over 30 years and has practiced various spiritual disciplines for longer. His work is based on 20 years of teaching the meditations and energy work of Michael Barnett\, as well as practicing healing arts and body work. He is excited to bring the two worlds together and provide a space for people to experience themselves and nature in a conscious and deeper way that will open them to the healing possibilities that being in nature can bring. \nNo booking required – please arrive ready for a prompt 10:00am start. DESCRIPTION:Come along to Ellenborough Park West for a FREE mindfulness session led by Steve. The sessions will be accessible for beginners and experienced participants alike and can be experienced as a one-off session or a progression over the summer. \nWe will begin with a short mindfulness/meditation practice to bring ourselves into the moment with a deeper awareness of ourselves. We will then take that awareness and presence out into the park to connect with and experience nature more deeply from a grounded and centered place. \nSteve has worked with trees and nature for over 30 years and has practiced various spiritual disciplines for longer. His work is based on 20 years of teaching the meditations and energy work of Michael Barnett\, as well as practicing healing arts and body work. He is excited to bring the two worlds together and provide a space for people to experience themselves and nature in a conscious and deeper way that will open them to the healing possibilities that being in nature can bring. \nNo booking required – please arrive ready for a prompt 10:00am start. DESCRIPTION:Weston Town Council with John Lewis department store will be putting up a plaque dedicated to John Lewis who owned property in Weston-super-Mare.  \nThe Blue Plaque will go onto the gate pillar of 72 Bristol Rd Lower\, Weston-super-Mare BS23 2PY unveiled Friday 28th July 2.00pm. \n\nJohn Lewis came from a Shepton Mallet family of bakers and milliners. Through sheer hard work and entrepreneurial zeal he rose to become one of the nation’s favourite retail traders and his name\, together with those of later associates Messrs Waite and Rose\, still adorn the front of many large stores and supermarkets from London’s prestigious Oxford Street to provincial cities and towns. \n\nIn 1843\, when John was seven his father died leaving him\, five sisters and their 46-year old mother in challenging circumstances.  \nWhilst John Lewis moved to London to begin making his fortune the sisters\, under their widowed aunt’s care\, were by 1861 living in High Street Weston-super-Mare where they ran a ‘fancy’ stationery and dress making establishment. Living ‘above the shop’ was then normal practice. A decade later they were still in High Street – at number 27. \n\nJohn Lewis’s business endevours in London were beginning to reap rewards allowing his first freehold purchase to be made – a house in Weston-super-Mare for his sisters’ early retirement. The detached house at the junction of Arundell Road and Bristol Road lower came with a substantial garden (since developed) and magnificent views over the bay.  \n\nCllr John Crockford-Hawley said “John Lewis is a household retail name and yet few people will know of his personal family links with Weston-super-Mare and our own High Street. As the world of shopping continues to change it’s fitting that we commemorate the Lewis contribution to our local story with this Blue Plaque”. \n\nThe Blue Plaque will go onto the gate pillar of 72 Bristol Rd Lower\, Weston-super-Mare BS23 2PY unveiled Friday 28th July 2.00pm.
